Complexus supports ESB Networks & Sigma Wireless with 4G/LTE

Challenge

To design, build and integrate a mission critical private mobile communications network. This is to provide dedicated Smart Grid connectivity which forms part of the ESB Networks’ innovation strategy to deliver a more secure, dependable, and sustainable electricity network.

Key aims:

  • Decarbonisation of the electricity system.
  • Enhanced control and visibility of the electrical network.
  • Supporting the increased connection of renewable energy on the electricity network.
  • Enabling the electrification of heat and transport.
  • Facilitating flexibility on the electrical distribution network.
  • Faster fault resolution providing a reduction in outage durations.

With multiple vendors delivering different elements across the solution, integration and technical delivery alignment became a challenge, especially around IP addressing.

Solution

Complexus Limited was engaged by Sigma Wireless to provide technical design assurance to cater for the challenges of a multi-vendor delivery. Covering such disciplines as IP architecture, cybersecurity and systems integration of both the front-end capabilities and back-office operational support services.

ESB Networks selected Sigma Wireless Communications to supply and install a new 4G LTE Core Network and Radio Access Network.

  • Nokia supplying the LTE (4G) Network.
  • Westemo supplying the end point router (IEC101 to IEC104 interface).
  • Sigma Wireless, Aspire, Ekco and IBM to provide the other back-office functions.
